How Much Internet Speed Do You Need for IPTV?

Most "bad IPTV" complaints come down to bandwidth, not the provider. These are the numbers that matter and how to check your own connection properly.

Bandwidth per stream

• SD (480p): 3–4 Mbps
• HD (720p): 6–8 Mbps
• Full HD (1080p): 8–12 Mbps
• 4K UHD (2160p): 20–25 Mbps

Those figures are per simultaneous stream. Two 4K TVs at once need roughly 50 Mbps of headroom, on top of whatever else your household is using.

Latency and stability matter more than raw speed

A stable 30 Mbps line beats an unstable 300 Mbps one. Packet loss and jitter cause the freezing most people blame on the server. Run a speed test three times at peak hours and watch how much the result moves.

How to test correctly

• Test on the same device you stream with, not your phone
• Test during your normal viewing time, not at 3 a.m.
• Compare Wi-Fi against a wired Ethernet result
• Check whether other devices are downloading in the background

Fixes that work

• Move to the 5 GHz band or run Ethernet to the streaming device
• Place the router in the open, not inside a cabinet
• Increase the player buffer by one or two seconds
• Switch to the FHD version of a channel if 4K is marginal
